The hill of PrioraThe hill of Priora is, amongst those surrounding Sorrento, the most evocative. From it all Sorrento and its peninsula can be seen, from the Scutolo Point to the Point of Cape of Sorrento. Its vineyards, like those of the nearby Mount Corbo, have always been famous for the “sweet liqueur of Bacchus” which they produce. The grape festival is just one more reason for a whole some trip to this marvellous hill. To reach Priora there is a modern, panoramic road, the Nastro Verde, which begins at the crossroads for the Cape of Sorrento, near the Hotel Metropole. There is also a pubblic bus service on this road. We’d like to indicate a more interesting itinerary to be done on foot. Any hard-ship involved will be worth it. From the via degli Aranci, take the turning leading to the Hilton Sorrento Palace Hotel. At the end of this road is the 18th century church of S. Antonio, attached to the old people’s home. Beyond this church are steed, winding steeps carved into the rocks leading up the hill. The way is marked by the presence of numerous votives niches and modern sculptures of the signs of the cross. The natural setting combined with a nature distinguished by dry masonry in calcareous stone, the tricks, of light through the green of the olives all make this sport more evocative. Halfway up is a Chapel with a three-arched belltower helps accentuate the perspective effect, submerged in a cascade of greenery. After a brief stop we go on to reach the Crocevia district, with its 18th century Church of St. Mary. Here the going is easier and passing through olives and vineyards, after about ten minutes the zone of Priora is reached. On the little square which is surrounded by ancient dwellings, stands the church of St. Atanasio, bishop of Sorrento. It is a church with two aisles: one, the major, is covered by a lacunar canvas ceiling, the other, with an indipendent entrance, is circular vaulted and more antique. Over the main altar is an 18th century painting depicting the Virgin of the graces while on the left is a bust of St. Atanasio. After visiting the church, it’s time to walk through the typical streets of the town to feel the atmosphere of a typical country village, admiring the glimpses of the stupendous panorama, tasting the farmer’s generous hospitality as they no doubt will offer you a taste of their delicious wine. To return to Sorrento if you’re tired, there’s the local bus. For those still wishing to walk, there’s an alternative road to the one already described. It’s necessary to take the road next to the church, an old mule track which winds through olive and orange groves in an unpollutted area. Following this road, the locality called capodimonte is a quickly reached, once again offering a panoramic view of Sorrento, and in particular the fishing village at the Marina Grande. Following a brief tract of the sorrentine highway the town centre is reached by the Corso Italia.
