Since 16 May 2010 the interpreting service has been reintroduced at Sorrento Hospital “S. Maria della Misericordia”, as a result of the economic co-operation of the Sorrento Foundation and town council. The service consists of the permanent presence of four multilingual units at the hospital’s accident and emergency department in shifts from 8 am to 5 pm every day, including bank holidays, with a service by telephone from 5 pm to 8 am and is designed to help foreign tourists who need treatment. It has been proposed for the second year running, given that it is very useful to tourists, tour operators and health staff. The effort to keep this initiative going is worthwhile, judging by the appreciative comments in correspondence from those who used the service last year. This year it has been decided to add to the service, giving the carabinieri and police the interpreters’ telephone numbers in case they are needed at the relevant stations by tourists who find themselves in difficulty. The service will be provided continuously until 31 October.
